Chris Cuomo Criticizes Chris Murphy for Linking Trump to Flood Fatalities

Cuomo Critiques Senator Murphy’s Remarks on Texas Flooding

On Tuesday, News Nation anchor Chris Cuomo targeted Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy for his comments criticizing President Donald Trump following a tragic flash flood in central Texas.

Murphy, in a recent social media post, suggested that the flood’s aftermath was a direct result of Trump’s disrespectful remarks about public employees, like meteorologists. Cuomo described Murphy’s statement as a “cheap shot,” implying that Murphy was capitalizing on the deaths of children for political leverage against Trump.

Cuomo questioned Murphy’s intentions, asking whether his constituents truly wanted to hear such cynical attacks during a time of tragedy. He expressed frustration, saying, “An accurate weather forecast helps avoid a fatal disaster,” and challenged Murphy’s approach in light of the circumstances.

Cuomo also pointed out that while the National Weather Service had faced cuts under Trump, it was essential to view the situation in context. He mentioned that, during the incident, adequate staff was present in Texas and that the meteorologists were not hampered in their responsibilities.

Despite the prevailing anti-Trump sentiment in some media circles regarding the flood, several meteorologists defended the National Weather Service’s actions, asserting they performed their duties effectively.

For example, ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos claimed there had been a significant staffing shortage in the affected National Weather Service offices. However, Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with a Ph.D. from Florida State University, refuted this claim, stating that the NWS in Texas had sufficient staff on duty and executed their tasks competently.

Additional reports indicated that the meteorologists had extra personnel on hand during the storm, a standard practice for such events. Jason Runyen, an NWS meteorologist, noted that staffing levels typically increase during significant weather events.

The recent flooding resulted in over 100 fatalities, including more than 24 children, as reported by NBC News.
