CNN's Van Jones warned Democrats on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump's recent primary victory reveals how Republican voters are “not afraid” of President Joe Biden.
According to the Associated Press, Trump defeated former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in New Hampshire's first national primary by about 8 points. projected. The former president recently won the Iowa caucuses with a historic 51% of the vote and is on track to win his party's nomination.
Jones said a close race between Trump and Biden would be bad news for Democrats.
“Some of what we see as Mr. Trump's strength, his resiliency, is actually a reflection of Mr. Biden's fragility. Republicans are not afraid of Joe Biden,” Jones said. “They're not afraid. They don't think it's going to hurt them to take on someone so damaged, so frankly insane, so many flaws. Because polls have shown over and over again that even with 978 felonies, he's still neck and neck with Biden. So that's a red flag, some red flags for President Trump. That’s true, but this should be a red flag for Democrats.”
Recent opinion polls have shown that Mr. Trump is leading Mr. Biden in several key battleground states in the general election to be held in 2024. A Dec. 11 CNN/SSRS poll showed Trump leading the incumbent president by 10 points, and an Oct. 11 Emerson College poll showed Trump leading by 9 points. Trump also leads Biden in Georgia, North Carolina, Florida and Arizona. according to A Jan. 8 poll from Redfield & Wilton Strategies showed Trump with an 11-point lead in Florida and an even stronger 8-point lead in Georgia.
A growing number of Democrats are calling on Biden not to run for re-election, given his age and negative polling. CNN's David Axelrod suggested it might not be “wise” for Biden to remain in the race, and Democratic Washington state Rep. Pramila Jayapal said Biden's 2024 campaign is “unwise.” We are in a very difficult situation.”
