Cochise County ballot hand-count case could affect future election audits

An attorney told a panel of the Arizona Court of Appeals that the increased number of early voters was confusing.

A state appeals court Tuesday heard arguments about Cochise County’s plan from last year to manually count all ballots.

The Arizona Retired American Alliance has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the move.

Their attorney, Aria Branch, told the court that a full manual count would render the audit obsolete.

“By definition, a 100% audit is not really an audit.

A panel judge said the law covering early voting audits only allows a maximum of 5,000 votes.

The Court of Appeals decision will have a significant impact on how audits will be treated in future elections.
