A special election is then held asking for a half-cent sales tax to be provided to the establishment. Construction of the new one is estimated to cost $92 million.
Sheriff Mark Danells said he has $20 million in seed funding from the state and expects to receive more from the legislature.
“I know it’s a lot of money, but the last prison investment lasted nearly 40 years,” said Cochise County Sheriff Mark Danells.
“Jail life is 20 years, so we got double the life of this prison, so we saved a lot of money. I am excited about this project. Voters here in Cochise County are optimistic for May as they understand the need for new prisons. ”
Town halls will be held over the next few months for residents to learn more about the project and provide feedback before the special election in May.
