Democrat Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy appeared on MSNBC on Wednesday, accusing the Trump administration of misleading the public and misrepresenting the effectiveness of Iran’s operations.
The US launched a 37-hour operation on Sunday, including seven B-2A spirit bombers and large-scale weapon intruders of up to 14 GBU-57s to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. When he appeared in the “Deadline: The White House,” Murphy denounced the administration, saying that the strike “eliminates” Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
“There’s always a low confidence in assessing strikes in foreign countries designed to destroy something underground. There’s no camera there. I don’t know exactly what we hit or didn’t collide. But the original rating for DIA was [Defense Intelligence Agency]the photographic evidence is that they didn’t fundamentally destroy these assets,” Murphy said.
Murphy also criticised the administration’s claims of success, calling them “lies” intended to mislead the American people about the effectiveness of military action.
clock:
“They’re angry. They’re furious. They’re caught up in a lie so you can see it in their voices. They got caught up in a lie. They got caught up in a lie. They got caught up in a lie. They got caught up in a lie. They’re trying to hide that lie with this correct digging.
Murphy then said misleading intelligence could lead to unintended consequences, including unnecessary wars.
“They fudged their intelligence about our national security. You can’t do it because, as we’ve seen many times in our history, it leads us to the unnecessary war that has chosen. (Related: “Are we going back to the same stupid game?”: Newtginrich warns about a ceasefire)
The DIA, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and even the Iranian government have already challenged the CNN report claiming that damage from US strikes at Iran’s nuclear sites is limited, strengthening its assessment that Tehran’s nuclear advancement has significantly retreated. Contrary to CNN’s findings, the agencies, together with Israel’s Atomic Energy Commission, said the strike had caused significant damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
“This is a preliminary, low confidence report and will continue to be refined as additional intelligence becomes available,” a senior DIA official told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. “We are working with the appropriate authorities to investigate unauthorized disclosure of confidential information.”
US Special Envoy Steve Witkov also said in “Ingraham’s Angle,” it was “nearly impossible” for Iran to revive nuclear weapons programs at sites targeting US strikes. Witkov highlighted what is called permanent damage to the core components of the program.
“Conversion facilities that many people are not aware of, stop the initial concentration process and complete the concentration process. Once 90% is reached, the material needs to be metalized and formed into round balls, Witkoff said.
