Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Things haven't been great for President Joe Biden these past few weeks, but surviving the NATO press conference has helped his campaign survive another day.
That was until news last week. From reports of growing pessimism about President Obama to Democratic officials believing the president could step down by the end of the week, a world in which Vice President Kamala Harris leads the Democratic field was looking increasingly real. With Biden's campaign imploding, Republican officials at the Republican National Committee seemed prepared to address that possibility, offering up ideas for how to attack Harris on the campaign trail in a conversation with The Daily Caller.
“Let's get the truth. Let's start there. One of the problems with Kamala Harris is that she got her position based on her race and gender. Don't take my word for it. Look at the Democratic Party's repeated rhetoric leading up to her nomination. Many Democratic senators and presidential candidates have also said it's time to put a woman of color on the shortlist. Those are their words, not mine,” former presidential candidate and Trump surrogate Vivek Ramaswami told the Caller.
“The problem is, if someone achieves a status based solely on their genetic characteristics, whether that was wrong 200 years ago, it's still wrong today.”

If Harris becomes the nominee and Republicans need to mount a counter-strategy, Thomas Hodgson, Trump's Massachusetts campaign chairman, told the Caller that Republicans should focus on getting as much attention as possible for Harris.
“I would probably like to have a lot of conversations with her because she doesn't express herself very well. I think it would expose the fact that she's done very little,” Hodgson said. “She was supposed to be in charge of the border. She's never been to the border. The border remains open… She just doesn't care. She won't articulate what's going on and what shouldn't be going on. So I would like to have a lot of conversations about that.”
The Republican National Convention kicked off, uniting Republicans for a fourth straight night while Democrats continued their civil war over whether Biden should remain the presidential nominee.
Meanwhile, Biden gave an interview to Black Entertainment Television (BET) on Tuesday in which, while preaching about how people should treat one another, Biden appeared to forget Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's name and referred to him as a “nigger man.”
“So it’s all about treating people with dignity. And it’s about, e.g. [the heat I’m getting] “It's because I named a black man for secretary of defense,” Biden said, though parts of his remarks were unclear.
“I nominated Ketanji Brown because of the people I nominated,” Biden continued.
Biden also told BET that he would consider withdrawing from the presidential race if any health issues were diagnosed, after it was revealed in early July that a neurologist and Parkinson's disease specialist had visited the White House several times in recent months. The apparent gaffes, senior citizen comments and now his COVID-19 diagnosis appear to be fueling fears about Biden's fitness to be president and whether he can win the election. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Biden ally who had previously said he had no intention of ousting Biden, has told the president he would be better off dropping out of the race. according to To ABC News.
Another of the president's closest aides, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, told him that choosing to continue the campaign would jeopardize the party's chances of winning the November election. Axios Former President Barack Obama has also reportedly told aides that Biden should reconsider running in 2024. according to In The Washington Post.
Even if Harris becomes the nominee and tries to distance herself from a struggling Biden, Ohio's Republican lieutenant governor, Jon Husted, told the Caller that it doesn't matter. Harris' track record isn't all that great, he said.
“If the Democrats who chose Joe Biden in the primary don't make him their nominee, then they're the ones trying to hijack our democracy. And if they come out on top together or in any way, Kamala Harris is going to be on their list anyway. She's the most left-wing candidate on their list,” Husted said. “She's not much of a deal. She was supposed to be in charge of the border. Remember? They said Kamala Harris was going to be the border czar, and that was a miserable failure. We've seen terrorists and illegal immigrants coming in from all over the world just across the border.”
Biden continues to say he will remain in the race, as do his staff, but senior Democratic aides reportedly expect the president to withdraw from the race as soon as this weekend. according to To Axios.

Harris is seen by many as the most likely successor, in part because she would inherit the Democratic National Committee's funding. As Harris becomes more likely to become the Democratic nominee, even Trump acknowledges she could turn against him and step up her attacks on the vice president.
While Biden maintains he is in the running, his team is quietly testing how Harris might stack up against Trump through public opinion polls, sources told both The New York Times and NBC News. The decision to test Harris' electability comes after Trump “stepped up” his attacks on her at campaign rallies, the sources told the outlets.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told the Caller that Harris' nomination shouldn't change the Trump campaign's efforts to contrast a Biden administration with his own administration from 2016 to 2020.
“We're not changing anything. She's a co-owner of these policy debacles. She's the vice president. She's in charge. She can't get away with it,” the speaker told the caller.
“I'm happy to take on Kamala or whoever they put forward,” he added. “This election isn't about people, it's about policies.”
