Former temporary Maricopa County election worker indicted on multiple charges

Phoenix (AZ Family) — The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has announced the indictment of a man accused of stealing equipment while working as a temporary employee at the county elections office. The man was also charged with other thefts in the weeks prior to his arrest.

On Tuesday, prosecutors announced that Walter Alfonso Lingfield Jr. was charged with three felony counts and one misdemeanor.

He was formally charged with the following offences:

  • one count of computer tampering, a second-degree felony;
  • one count of theft, a third-degree felony;
  • one count of theft, a fourth-degree felony;
  • one count of criminal trespass, a third-degree misdemeanor;

As Arizona's Family previously reported, Lingfield said, Maricopa County Counting and Election CenterThese keys and other security measures will be used to access counting equipment on Election Day.

Police arrested Lingfield shortly thereafter at his north Phoenix home.

Stolen items were also recovered during the execution of the search warrant.

Sheriff's deputies said there was no evidence the theft was politically motivated, but investigators have not ruled out the possibility.

The theft resulted in the need to reprogram each key and input machine, costing more than $20,000.

Lingfield is also accused of stealing $9,500 worth of vintage jewelry from a mannequin at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Days before the theft of the campaign office, he allegedly slipped through a secured area and stole seven challenge coins and three coasters from the state Senate.

Lingfield is currently being held in the Maricopa County Jail without bail.
