President Donald Trump teased on Fox News Wednesday night that Democrats are making the agency a “bad guy” and want to make changes to the agency.
In the wake of Hurricane Helen, FEMA faced backlash for lack of resources and delays in delivering relief to affected areas such as North Carolina. Appearing on Fox News with host Sean Hannity, President Trump criticized FEMA’s failures while discussing how the Los Angeles County wildfires will affect Congress’ continuing resolution.
“I would say Los Angeles changed everything, because Los Angeles is going to need a lot of money, and a lot of people on the other side would like that to happen,” Trump said.
Hannity added to President Trump’s statement by pointing out how North Carolina was hit hard by Hurricane Helen. (Related: Exclusive: As wildfires rage and no help arrives, several neighbors take matters into their own hands)
“Well, they don’t care about North Carolina. The Democrats don’t care about North Carolina, what they’ve done to FEMA is so bad. FEMA complicates everything. “It’s a whole other discussion because FEMA hasn’t done its job for the last four years,” Trump said. “FEMA was working very well.”

“Florida had hurricanes. Alabama had tornadoes. But unless you have a certain type of leadership, it really gets in the way. FEMA is going to be a big discussion soon, because I wants states to deal with their own problems,” Trump added.
A Category 4 hurricane reduced North Carolina to rubble in late September 2024, devastating many cities and towns. According to The state suffered an estimated $78.7 billion in damage and 219 deaths, according to the National Center for Environmental Information. President Trump continued to claim that authorities were hampering recovery efforts. He said he would visit North Carolina before heading to California.
President Trump went on to say that he loves helping states like Oklahoma, but “if we get hit by a tornado or something, before the federal government steps in and gives us ‘funds.’ , let the state of Oklahoma fix it.”
“FEMA is getting in the way of everything. In fact, the Democrats are not using FEMA to help North Carolina. That makes no sense. So I’m going to skip Friday. I’m going to stop in North Carolina. First. Stop, because these people have been treated very badly by the Democratic Party. We’re going to fix this,” Trump said. “They’re still dealing with the damage from the hurricane from a few months ago. Then they’re going to California.”
A fire broke out in the Southern California coastal town of Pacific Palisades on January 7, destroying thousands of homes and forcing many residents to evacuate. By evening, fires had broken out in Altadena and Pasadena, destroying more homes.
Since the fires began, both Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have faced criticism for their leadership and lack of preparation. In addition to the lack of resources, reports indicate that local reservoirs and fire hydrants are running out of water in the Pacific Palisades.
