Growing feral cats population in Yuma County

Yuma, AZ (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma’s feral cat population is increasing.

But the Humanitarian Society of Yuma (HSOY) says there are ways to control it.

Kitten season has begun and HSOY needs your help to keep the feral cat population under control.

Warming contributes to an increase in cat numbers

Rafael Garcia of HSOY said: In a year he gives 1-3 litters, and in one litter he can give birth to 1-8 kittens. “

Cat colonies are spread throughout Yuma.

The Humane Society implemented a trap-neuter-reinstate method to humanely manage the cat population.

We treated about 1,200 cats last year alone.

Garcia says this is a big concern.

If you see a stray cat, first contact the welfare association by phone.

Garcia says the best thing to do is “reach out. Often people see those cats, pick them up, catch them, take them to a shelter, and assume they’re doing the right thing.” Some of those cats may have already been cared for by people or already modified.
