In an interview that aired Monday, Rep. Usha Vance said criticism of Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio is focused on “jokes” about childfree women to avoid discussion of issues and policies that make parenting “really hard” for parents.

“I took a moment to actually look at what he said and try to understand what the context was and so forth, which is something I really wish people did a little more often. And the fact is, he was just making a joke because he wanted to say something that was substantive and actually meaningful,” Usha Vance told Earhart.

“And I just wish sometimes people would talk about these things and spend less time arguing about these three words or those three words, because what he was really saying is that being a parent in this country is really hard and sometimes our policies are designed in ways that make it even harder,” Usha Vance continued. “And we should be asking ourselves why is that true? What is it about our leaders and the way they think about the world that makes it sometimes harder for parents? I really think that's a conversation we should be having and I understand why he said that.”
Usha Vance also fired back at those who claim the Republican vice presidential nominee is trying to upset people with his comments.
“JD would never, and never would he say anything that would hurt anyone who is trying to start a family. It's really hard to start a family and he made that clear then,” Usha Vance said. “He still makes that clear now and we have a lot of friends who have been in a similar position. It's a tough thing and no one wants to ridicule or make fun of it.”

“I also understand that there are many other reasons why people choose not to have a family, and many of those reasons are very valid,” Usha Vance continued. “What I would say is, let's take a look at the real conversation that he's trying to have and engage in that and try to understand what we can do to make things better for many of us who have families, who want to have families and for whom it's really difficult. What can we do to make life easier in 2024?”
