California lawmakers have just passed a plan aimed at countering efforts by the president and his Republican allies to maintain Congressional control. Gavin Newsom emphasized that the partisan districts proposed by Democrats are a crucial response to President Trump’s threats against American democracy.
According to Newsom, Trump’s efforts to undermine mail-in voting and his decision to deploy troops to American cities showcase his authoritarian tendencies. California, he argues, has a responsibility to counteract these actions.
Newsom claimed that Trump is building “his civilian army,” citing the deployment of federal immigration agents during unrest and reinforcements of National Guard members in cities like Los Angeles and Washington.
“He’s trying to manipulate the election,” Newsom said. “He’s setting the stage to claim the election was fair even if he doesn’t win.” He urged observers to consider the events unfolding in the country leading up to 2025.
This is setting the tone for the voting campaign that Newsom and his Democratic allies will launch in the coming 74 days.
On Thursday, California lawmakers scheduled a special election for November 4th, where voters will decide on new partisan districts.
The proposed voting law, known as Prop. 50, seeks to discard the legislative boundaries drawn by the state’s Independent Commission in 2021.
Newsom remarked, “If the playing field is level, there’s no doubt that Republicans will lose their majority in the House next year.”
He argued that California’s actions are in response to what occurred in Texas, aiming to provide the American public with a fair opportunity.
Speaker Richard Hudson, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, accused Newsom of attempting to “rig” the system for his own gain.
“Instead of addressing the crisis in California—homelessness, crime, and the rising cost of living—Gavin Newsom is undermining the state constitution for his political ambitions,” Hudson stated.
The new districting plan aims to counteract efforts in Texas that are expected to boost GOP representation in 2026, with the state legislature poised to approve its own redistricting soon.
Newsom also noted that the alternative for California and Democrats would be to “do nothing.”
“I believe people across the nation are going to rally for this here in California,” he added. “They see what’s at stake; it’s not just about our state. It’s about the entire country and the integrity of our elections.”
