Illinois Man Charged After Telling Police He Shot Himself In Leg While Dreaming

A Chicago suburban resident is facing firearm charges after he accidentally shot himself in the leg after having a dream about a home burglar, police said Tuesday.

A 62-year-old man from Lake Barrington, who identified himself as Mark M. Dikala, reported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy that he accidentally shot himself in the leg while having a dream that someone broke into his home. according to Press release from the Sheriff’s Office. “I took out a .357 Magnum revolver and fired at the suspected intruder,” the man told law enforcement.

“When the shot was fired, he shot himself, apparently waking up from a dream,” the press release said. (Related: Police say 1-year-old boy shot in head)

The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on April 10, when the man was hospitalized and treated for gunshot wounds.

Authorities searched the man’s residence and found no evidence of an attempted break-in, but found that the man’s State Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID) card had expired. Officers issued a warrant on June 9, accusing Dikala of both felony possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and reckless firing of a firearm, according to a press release.

After his arrest on Monday, the man was released on bail and is scheduled to hear the situation in court on June 29.
