Buster Johnson and Sonny Borelli are on a collision course that could put them at odds in the August 2024 Republican primary.
Borrelli cannot seek re-election to the 30th state Senate seat because of Arizona’s term limit. The Senate Majority Leader confirmed Tuesday that he will form a commission of inquiry to evaluate the potential candidacy of the Mojave County Supervisor of the Third District.
Supervisor Johnson has completed his seventh term and submitted a statement to the elections office on Monday, April 3, announcing his intention to seek re-election next year.
This is the latest note in the chair scenario where Hildy Angius is considering moving from the District 2 supervisor seat to the Arizona Legislature. Angius hopes to succeed Congressman Leo Biacicucci for the 30th District. Leobiaciucci will have his term limited and will seek Borrelli’s seat in the Senate.
District 5 Supervisor Ron Gould also formally announced his interest in seeking re-election. With Gould and Johnson pursuing new terms, supervisor Gene Bishop retiring in District 4, and Angius eyeing a state position, District 1 supervisor Travis Lingenfelter is set to move forward next year. It is the only incumbent board whose election intentions are unknown.
