Maricopa County Board certifies election results; CD3 primary heads to recount

Phoenix (AZ Family) Just two weeks after Arizona's primary election, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors certified the results.

There is currently one race that requires a recount: former Phoenix City Councilwoman Yasamin Ansari is leading former state Rep. Raquel Teran by just 42 votes, which would trigger an automatic recount.

The two are competing for Congressman Ruben Gallego's 3rd District seat, as Gallego is running for the U.S. Senate.

Because the district is strongly Democratic, whoever wins the primary will likely head to Washington, DC, after the general election.

County supervisors certified the primary election results on Monday and also discussed the impact of a new law that requires mail-in ballots to be counted on Election Day where they were dropped off.

“From all reports, we've heard a lot of great feedback from poll workers who were thrilled with how county staff assisted them with the process and there were no significant delays in releasing the results on election night,” Maricopa County Elections Director Scott Jarrett said.

The results of the recount will be kept secret until a judge reads them in court.
