Maricopa County completes hand count audit of ballots as part of recount process

Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) — The Maricopa County Elections Office completed a ballot hand-count audit as part of an automatic recount that included three close races.

The state’s automatic recount process occurs when the margin between two candidates is within 0.5%. In Maricopa County, his three races were detailed, including contests for State Attorney General, Public Supervisor, and State Representative for Legislative District 13.

Maricopa County completed logic and accuracy testing of the tallying device last week. This is a necessary step before starting reaggregation. The next step is his 2% recount audit over the weekend in Maricopa County.

On Tuesday afternoon, the county elections office said it had finished hand counting after verifying the accuracy of its tallying equipment. According to the county, the bipartisan commission hand-counted his more than 32,000 votes over the course of three days, cast in his three precincts involved in the recount.

The bipartisan board is appointed by the Maricopa County party chair. Saturday’s Audit Committee was made up of 52 Republicans, 35 Democrats and 3 libertarians. Sunday’s board was made up of 55 Republicans, 27 Democrats, and 3 Libertarians. On Tuesday, the last day of the count, 31 Republicans, 25 Democrats and 1 Libertarian attended.

The next court hearing on the recount is set for December 22nd. All 15 counties must complete their recounts by that date.
