Maricopa County leaders are moving forward with plans to revive professional hockey in the valley.
Chairman Thomas Galvin of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors announced on Monday that Andrea Doan will chair the newly formed Advisory Committee on Pro Hockey. This committee is made up of local figures dedicated to attracting National Hockey League (NHL) teams back to Arizona, particularly after the Arizona Coyotes franchise relocates to Utah. Doan, a long-time resident of Arizona, is married to former Coyote Shane Doan.
“Arizona holds a special place in my heart, and the hockey community here is eager to bring the NHL back,” she stated. “I am truly honored to lead this advisory committee and am excited to collaborate with my fellow community leaders on this significant endeavor.”
The strategic plan focuses on key areas such as securing team ownership, identifying a venue, and engaging with the community to promote the sport.
The Matt Shot Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation, which advocates for community outreach and hockey’s growth, plays a crucial role here. They aim to provide individuals of all ages with opportunities to enhance their skills and foster a love for the game.
“We’re thrilled to keep introducing hockey to our community and build a lasting passion for the sport,” remarked Lindsay Fry, co-founder of the foundation. “We understand how vital it is to have an NHL team in Arizona and are committed to supporting the game’s growth to usher in a new chapter for the Arizona Coyotes.”
When Galvin took office as chairman earlier this year, he made a promise to work towards bringing NHL hockey back to Arizona.
The Coyotes are set to move to Salt Lake City following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, ending a 26-year presence in the valley.
