This year, patrons of the Mojave County Library in Lake Havasu City will have a convenient new way to return borrowed books.
Residents of Lake Havasu City earlier this month offered $7,443 toward the construction of a drive-up book drop-off library on McCulloch Boulevard at the library. Accepting that donation will require a vote next week by the Mojave County Board of Supervisors.
Mojave County Librarian Superintendent Jake Barillaro said the drop-off will be located in front of the library, near the south exit of the building. The new return box will be the only drop off accessible by car at the facility.
According to Barillaro, it’s a nice feature that Havasu residents haven’t requested yet, but patrons may enjoy it during the city’s hot summers.
“I think there were a lot of people who came to the library during the summer and didn’t want to get out of the car and return their stuff,” Barillaro said. “This is a great proposal from a donor and I believe people will appreciate it.”
According to Barillaro, drop-offs also provide additional convenience for patrons who may suffer from physical limitations.
A donor, identified as 78-year-old Mike Delaney, a Havasu resident, detailed that the facility needed a drive-up book return box.
“I knew we needed it. They should have had it because the library was built,” Delaney said. There are people, a lot of them are retired, a lot of them are disabled, and getting out of the car to return the books is not something we need to do…for me, it’s easy.”
The Mojave County Board of Supervisors plans to vote on whether to accept Delaney’s donation at its next board meeting in Kingman Monday.
