The Montgomery County Group filed a formal complaint with the Tennessee Ethics Committee against state legislator Aron Mabury, saying there is a conflict of interest as a member of the state capitol and local school boards.
The group says Mabury, a Clarksville Republican, should step down from the Clarksville Montgomery County Board of Education, primarily because of his vote to support state laws that can discriminate against immigrant students. The complaints filed on April 3rd are based on discussions about Mabury’s votes House Bill 793inconsistent with the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allows school districts and charter schools to deny student registration without permanent legal documents, ensuring access to public education for all children.
“By supporting this bill, Mabury violates the Board of Education’s ethics law, particularly his obligation to provide equal educational opportunities and refrain from using his position for partisan interest,” the complaint states.
The group, including current and former educators Katherine Garrigan, Joy Rice, Karen Reynolds, Katherine Lawson and Jeri Highly Britten, said the bill could violate federal laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color or national origin that would lose $1.1 billion in federal education funds in Tennessee.
The submission argues several ethical violations against the first term representative of House District 68, including maintaining student rights and not supporting the entire school community, allowing partisan influence to influence his vote, not only undermining diversity, equity and inclusion, but also does not prioritize student needs.
Mabury, who voted Monday in favor of a bill restricting immigrant students’ registration, issued a statement saying. This complaint is meritless and clearly politically motivated. It’s a hopeless stunt by a local leftist who rejects the conservative values our community cherish and rejects the local values I proudly represent at the Capitol. They are obsessed with overturning the will of people. All previous attempts have failed. I am completely transparent about my service on the school board and my intention to serve the rest of my term. I am totally confident in the Ethics Committee and trust that facts lead to an appropriate course of action. ”
The House Government Steering Committee meeting on Monday was suspended by a minister who recited the Lord’s Prayer in protest of the bill passed 8-7.
The issue struck Congress all year round, ralliving opponents against multiple Senate and House committee votes.
The Senate version of the bill, sponsored by Sen. Bo Watson of Hixon, chairman of the Finance Committee, requires school districts to check students’ immigration status and charge tuition fees to register. The House bill, hosted by House Majority Leader William Lamberth of Portland, gives the district the option to check the status of immigration.
Lawmakers are Pryler v at the Supreme Court level, a 43-year-old ruling requiring that the district provides services to all students. He said he would like to pass this measure to challenge Doe.
