Concerns Raised Over Minnesota Governor’s Ties to China
A recently disclosed document has brought attention to worries expressed by officials at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s connections with China after his involvement in the Democratic presidential race last year.
These documents were acquired by Judicial Watch through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. They discuss the Biden administration’s examination of Walz’s longstanding interactions with the Chinese government. The tension surrounding these ties appears to have intensified following Walz’s selection as a running mate for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“China is pleased,” stated DHS officials in a group chat shortly after Walz officially joined the campaign on August 7, 2024.
Critics from the Republican party have pointed to Walz’s numerous visits—about 30—to communist states, partially funded by the Chinese government, as a basis for their concerns.
The Daily Caller News Foundation has reported extensively on Walz’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), revealing, for instance, that he taught in Nebraska in the 1990s. Additionally, he has appointed individuals aligned with the CCP to state committees and participated in various events organized by China-related nonprofits.
“Walz got a VP. You all have no idea what this means for our dealings with the People’s Republic of China and local government,” one DHS official remarked in a chat group. “This is serious intel that targets those who can influence Washington, D.C.”
Another DHS staff member suggested bringing in the FBI for their counterintelligence expertise, emphasizing the necessity for such involvement.
Walz has not responded to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation regarding these claims.
A whistleblower has reportedly informed the House Oversight Committee about concerns stemming from last year’s messages as the committee investigates Walz’s affiliations with the CCP. Chairman James Comer has requested documentation from DHS, but the agency has resisted this request.
“This is as serious as the disclosure of Russian influence. The Biden administration seems to be covering this up to aid their electoral strategy,” remarked Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
Even following an unsuccessful campaign with Harris, Walz has faced scrutiny for his comments about China’s role in negotiations. In June, he questioned who, if anyone, possesses the moral authority to broker peace in the Middle East, alluding to the possibility that it could be the Chinese.
