Oversight Slaps Jill Biden Aide Anthony Bernal With Subpoena After He Dodges Testimony On Biden’s Mental Decline

House Supervisor Chairman James Kommer summoned Jill Biden’s former aide Anthony Bernal after refusing to testify with the Biden cognitive decline probe.

Comer summoned Bernal to appear before the committee at 10am on July 16th, according to images from the document posted to X.

The chairman has begun Summoned Emphasizing the close relationship between former President Joe Biden and former Lady Jill Biden and Vernal, he said, “The committee tried to understand whether it contributed to the former president’s efforts to hide fitness from Americans.”

“You have rejected the committee’s request, but your testimony is important to promote the committee’s oversight and legislative responsibility and interests,” he said. (Related: Trump White House clears how Biden’s aides tell it all)

“Your appearance was forced before the committee to avoid further delays,” Comer said.

The subpoena further outlined that Bernal’s lawyers had informed the committee that he had intended to cooperate and voluntarily participate in a transcribed interview for investigation.

On June 6, Bernal’s legal team said it had proposed for an interview on June 26th. As courtesy, the committee accepted the new date.

“Your lawyer also raised concern about the committee’s standard practice of providing interview topics just a week ago, claiming that this timeline doesn’t give you enough time to prepare for interviews,” Comer said.

“The committee disagrees, but it is sufficient to believe that it will be sufficient for more than a week — it acted in good faith and sent the interview topic to your lawyer on June 13th almost two weeks before the agreed interview date,” the letter continued.

Comer further detailed the timeline for the committee’s communications with Bernal’s lawyers, saying on June 18, Bernal’s legal team requested a further three-week delay to allow preparation for the transcribed interview. The committee rejected the request and confirmed that the transcribed interview would proceed as originally planned. The committee asked Bernal’s lawyer if he was still willing to appear and if he had to issue a subpoena.

Comer said within 10 minutes of the committee’s email, Bernal’s lawyer responded “no subpoena needed.”

However, Bernal’s lawyers allegedly told the committee Wednesday that Bernal had no longer willing to show up voluntarily for the June 26 interview, prompting a subpoena for the committee.

Bernal is one of four Biden administration aides, along with Neela Tanden, Ashley Williams and Annie Tomasini, who previously agreed to transcriptions of the interview.

Tanden told the committee in testimony closed Tuesday that she allowed the use of the autopen, but was not sure who gave the final approval, according to a Comer statement.
