Primary election poll workers needed in Yuma County

This is an opportunity to exercise some civic duty in the democratic process with some incentives.

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – With the July 30 primary election fast approaching, Yuma County is looking for volunteers to sign up as election poll workers.

Election staff are the key link between the election office and the voters they serve.

Arlyn Galaviz, Yuma County's director of public relations and communications management, said they don't need a set number of people, but there are always more people on any given day.

“At the end of the day, sometimes there aren't enough candidates, so we want to make sure that everybody has an adequate opportunity,” Galaviz said, “so that the election process runs as smoothly as possible.”

Job duties range from greeting and helping people at the door to helping with handling ballots.

“So you have to be a registered voter. So that's the only requirement we have other than your time and effort,” Galaviz said.

There are specific times and days that volunteers must be there and may need to take time off work.

“So we want everyone to come together a little bit by the 30th, the week of July 23, so we have time to get everything ready and done with the training,” Galaviz explained. “Yes, it will cost a little bit of money, but it's a good opportunity for people who want to make some extra cash.”

The cost is $150 per day, plus you have to arrive on-site the day before for set-up, which adds $20 to that, and $50 for mandatory training.

Not only do canvassers play an important role in the democratic process, but they also have the opportunity to meet their neighbors and make new friends.

You can register here.

Registering to be a poll worker in the primary election does not mean you will also work in the general election.

“Every election is separate, so this should be for the primary election, and then in the general election, we'll call on the people again,” Galaviz said. “If they don't get a chance this time, they'll get a chance in the general election.”
