Some locals say Biden is doing enough at the border, others disagree

Nogales, Arizona (KGUN) — Luis Aguirre Jr. is a Rio Rico resident who lives about 20 minutes from the US-Mexico border. He used to live in Nogales, and while some of President Joe Biden’s plans worked, others failed, he said.

The Biden administration sued former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey after filling a gap in the border wall with shipping containers.

Aguirre said he doesn’t feel the border needs shipping containers.

“It wasn’t asked at all. I don’t think we need that much security. We’re doing great,” he said.

Regarding Biden’s immigration plan, Aguirre said Biden has many challenges and is trying to address all of them.

“In a way, I think even if people cross the border illegally, they’ll actually find a job and that will benefit the towns and cities they go to,” he said.

He said many young people living near the border are being targeted by drug smugglers, and said Biden could do more.

“Santa Cruz County itself feels like it’s facing less of a drug problem right now. It’s a transportation problem, but fentanyl pills are still very active.”

In fiscal 2021, US Customs and Border Protection said there were more than 1.7 million immigrants who crossed illegally at the Southwest border. By 2022, that number will exceed 2.3 million.

Between April and September last year, the U.S. government filed criminal charges against nearly 3,000 people in Arizona who illegally entered or reentered the United States.

Sandy Zeigler said he supports these policies.

She is part of a group that calls itself the “Patriots”. They meet every Sunday at the corner of Her 22nd Street and Pantano Parkway in Tucson.

They wave Donald Trump flags and American flags in the sky, play music and sing the national anthem.

“This administration wants to destroy American sovereignty,” Zeigler said of the Biden administration.

She and her husband do business near the Douglas border and have seen firsthand how the border operates.

“I have spoken with the border guards and everyone is on high alert. They are very worried about losing this country,” she said.

Ziegler said more resources were needed and Biden said a state of emergency should be declared at the border.

“They are crossing borders constantly. They are crossing borders.

There is too much crime on the border under the Biden administration, she said.

“There are traffickers, sex trafficking, drugs, fentanyl, and everyone is being destroyed by this,” she said.

She believes Biden has no good intentions, even though he visited the El Paso border on Sunday.

“I don’t think his heart or mind or motives are real,” she said.

This is such a controversial issue that Arizona could be as divided as the border itself.

“This is a fence separating two neighbors,” Aguirre said, and Ziegler said, “We have to act.”
