On Saturday, former President Donald Trump won a landslide victory in the Jefferson County Republican Party's straw vote. The event was held in Gardendale.
In the US presidential election, Mr. Trump came in first place with 72% of the vote, followed by Governor DeSantis in a close second place with 19%. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley tied for third place with 5%.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie finished with just 1% of the vote. Mr. Christie, Mr. Ramaswamy and Mr. DeSantis recently suspended their campaigns after poor results in Iowa.
In the race for Alabama's 6th Congressional District, incumbent Congressman Gary Palmer won 57% of the vote, insurance agent Ken McPheeters won 14%, and businessman Gerrick Wilkins won 29%.

In Alabama's 7th Congressional District, Robin Liteker received 61% of the vote and talk radio host Chris Horn received 39%. The winner of CD7's Republican primary will challenge U.S. Rep. Terry Sewell (D-Selma) in the general election.
In the race for chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, former state senator Brian Taylor received 66% of the vote, beating Associate Justice Sarah Stewart's 34%.
In Alabama Court of Civil Appeals District 2, Chad Hanson received 62% of the vote and Stephen Davis Parker received 38%. In the race for No. 2 on the Court of Criminal Appeals, Thomas Govan received 51% of the vote, narrowly beating Rich Anderson's 49%. Both men work for the Alabama Attorney General's Office.
In the race for chairman of the Alabama Public Service Commission, incumbent Twinkle Kavanaugh received 73% of the vote. Robert L. McCollum of Tallapoosa County received just 27% of the vote.
Ann Eubank and Charlotte Meadows tied for third place on the Alabama Board of Education, each receiving 37% of the vote. Kelly Mooney came in third with 26%.
In Alabama State Board of Education No. 7, Oscar Mann received 53% of the vote. Doug Backus came in second with 24%, narrowly ahead of Allen Long's 23%.
Alabama's Republican primary election will be held on March 5, 2024. Alabama has no party registration, so anyone can participate in the primary. The winners of the Republican and Democratic primaries will then face each other in the general election on November 5th.

In recent election cycles, Democrats have suffered crushing electoral losses across the state while blocking the general election in Jefferson County. But Chris Brown, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party, said he is optimistic that 2024 will be the year that Republican candidates in Jefferson County can make a breakthrough.
Joel Blankenship and Johnny Amari are both running as Republicans for probate judge in Jefferson County, but they are not competing because there are two probate judge positions in Jefferson County.
Incumbent Republican Jefferson County Tax Collector Johnny Curry is also running for re-election in 2024. Curry was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey. Brown argued that all of these races can be won if Republicans support Republican candidates in Jefferson County.
At this point in the election cycle, polling shows A rematch between Trump and Biden in the 2020 presidential election is virtually inevitable. President Trump hopes to return to the White House after losing his presidency in 2020. Grover Cleveland was the last president to return to the White House in 1893, four years after losing reelection.
