About 25% of Maricopa County’s 2.4 million registered voters cast a ballot in Tuesday’s election, with more than 626,000 votes cast. The county previously expected about 30% of voters to participate.

“So when it comes to elections, we plan for the best-case scenario and the worst-case scenario,” said Adrian Borunda, a communications specialist with the Maricopa County Elections Department.
He said the county is preparing for more than 30% of eligible voters to participate in the polls.
Statewide turnout was about 26%, according to data from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. Of Arizona’s 4.1 million registered voters, Over 1 million people voted.
Maricopa County election officials did not report widespread problems or long lines Tuesday. Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates told Arizona families that about 74,000 people voted in person on primary election day. Gates said he expects 95% of the votes to be counted by Friday.
More than 220 voting centers were open in Maricopa County Tuesday, and Borunda said at least 20 more will likely be added ahead of the November general election.
