Special Election in Yuma County, Arizona

Yuma County, Arizona, is holding a special election today. Voters will decide which candidates move on to the general election in September.

The county’s voting center opened at 6 a.m. for the primary election concerning Council District 7.

Local voter Mary Lucky expressed her thoughts on the importance of participating in elections.

“I think it’s the responsibility of the citizens to vote. If you want to have a say in your government and in what’s happening in this country, it’s really crucial to vote,” Lucky stated.

Multiple candidates are vying for the seat previously held by the late Representative Raul Grijalva. There are five Democrats, three Republicans, and contenders from other parties.

Voters have the option to cast their ballots at any of the six designated voting centers, which include:

  • Martin Luther King Junior Youth Career Center
  • Yuma Main Library
  • Shane Conference Center at Arizona Western College
  • Summerton Community Center
  • San Luis Library
  • Cesar Chavez Cultural Center

The polls are open until the 7 p.m. deadline for voters to complete their voting. Additional locations available include:

  • Yuma County Recorder Office
  • Main Library
  • Foothills Library
  • Welton Library
  • San Luis Library
  • Summerton Library

Adelita Grijalva and Daniel Butierrez are viewed as front-runners in this race.

As the election neared its conclusion, Butierrez shared some encouraging thoughts. “I think we all need to come together, set aside our party differences, and that’s why we’re gathering tonight with Democrats and Republicans to show unity,” he mentioned.

Meen Wugir, another candidate, shared insights gathered from conversations with the public. “We had a wonderful opportunity to engage with thousands of voters. We covered the CD-7 and received a really positive response,” said Grijalva.

After the winners are announced, they will proceed to the general election slated for September.
