‘We Can’t Keep Kicking This Can Down The Road’: Haley Rips Trump, DeSantis Over Entitlement Spending

Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley on Sunday lashed out at former President Donald Trump and Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over entitlement spending.

“We need to understand that Social Security will fail in 10 years and Medicare will fail in eight years,” Haley said at the CNN Town Hall hosted by Jake Tupper. “But we should not take away those who contributed to this system. Haley called for raising the retirement age for young Americans and means-testing benefits. The Social Security Trust Fund is expected to dry up in 2033, according to to the Congressional Budget Office.

“We can’t keep kicking this can for the rest of our lives, so we have to do it,” Haley said. “Mr Trump and Mr DeSantis said we’re not going to work on entitlement reform, well, what you guys are doing is leaving it to the next president, and it’s going to put a lot of Americans in trouble. I know there is.”

In a 90-minute speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in March, Trump criticized Republicans over their plans to reform Social Security and Medicare, according to the Washington Examiner. report. Trump-backed Super PACs aired ads criticizing DeSantis for backing a budget that included Social Security and Medicare reforms.

“I think it’s important to be honest with the American public. We’re in this situation,” Haley added. “Don’t lie to them like, ‘We don’t need to work on rights reform.’ Yes, but for our children, we know they won’t get it anyway.”
