In an MSNBC Barber Shop interview from South Carolina that aired Friday, a group of Black male voters described the appeal of former President Donald Trump in comparison to President Biden.
MSNBC's Trymain Lee Asked When asked about what makes Trump attractive to black Americans, two voters immediately said “money.” Voter groups emphasized Mr. Trump's status as a businessman, compared his economic record as president to Mr. Biden's, and indicated a preference for the former president's personality. “Donald Trump may have all the craziness going on in his head, but when you read some of the things he says about business, he says, “When it comes to the business side, I can agree to some extent.” “I'm trying to grow my business. When it comes to Biden, I've never seen him seriously interested in a business like that. And that's what I'm worried about. is for me to have my own business to build generational wealth so my kids can watch and take on things when I'm not here.”
“Donald Trump has a reputation for being rich,” noted voter Anthony Freeman.
Inflation and high interest rates have plagued Biden's presidency.
The consumer price index, which comprehensively shows the prices of daily necessities including food and energy, rose by 3.4% on an annual basis in December, and by 0.3% on a month-on-month basis. according to to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Fed decided Wednesday to keep interest rates in its target range of 5.25% to 5.50%.
“A lot of people look up to this guy and want to be him,” said voter Juston Brown. “They want to enjoy the perks he has. He always seems to be able to circumvent the rules.”
Biden's popularity among black voters has declined in multiple polls in recent months. The president won 92% of the black vote in 2020.
Kinnard Givens, a young voter, said many of his friends are voting for or thinking about Trump.
“We've only ever voted in a presidential election once. Trump is like all we know…Trump and Biden. They're like, 'Well, we had nothing to do with Biden.' It's like that. We weren't with Trump. ” And all I hear over and over again is, “In the Trump administration, there was money.” Yes, I hear you, but personally, morally, I couldn't see myself,” Givens said.
